I recently bought this used laptop:

HP ZBook 17, G2. Intel i7 processor, 2.8 ghz
32 GB "Total Memory"
Half TB SSD Drive, plus 1 TB SSD. Miles of wide open space on the drives.
Video card - NVIDIA Quadro 3100M GPU.
I've been using Punch! Pro for years. This is the first time I bought the Architect version (V21).
I'm not tech savvy. I run a small-volume repair and remodeling company and use Punch! for the simple drafting I need to do.

This new-to-me computer has more power than any I've had and better graphics, but Punch still moves far more slowly than I'd like on a whole house plan with any level of detail.

Can this computer run V21 well and quickly? If not, how far up the $$$ chain do I need to get to a laptop that can run V21 fast?

Eric

Hi there,

Can you inform the size (in Mb) of the file that is running slow?

Hi there,

Some tips:

1 - You have a video chip, integrated with the motherboard. As a general rule if you have an onboard video card you don't have dedicated video memory => therefore as your processor is consuming resources for rendering calculations, you've low resources for graphic purposes, because they are shared resources.
2 - Particularly, your video chip has a low performance for 3D purposes (more in this article).
3 - As your laptop has an integrated system, you can't just change the video card.
4 - You can see the minimum system requirements in this page (System Requirements tab).

Some additional tips:

- Go to Render and Navigation Options => selecting the different options you can disable temporarily the lights or 3D objects, or topo etc. This will speed the rendering during the working process.
- Update the drivers (including video chip).
- Render Clear view => use this during the elaboration time.
- Try to apply the 3D objects (cabinets, furniture, etc), lights and topography at last.
- You can turn off the "Undo" feature => Edit => Undo preferences. This will speed your work. Just remember to save frequently (because this step deactivates the autosave for backup feature).
- To get a good Punch performance, close other programs, including the e-mail. Perhaps, other programs are using resources otherwise required in Punch.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for you replies, Pat!

I really do appreciate all the ideas to 'make it work fast enough' if I can't get the fast performance I desire. I think I've used them all over the years and will go back to them again if I have to.

My goal, however (at least for the moment) is to find a way to get this program to nudge fast - hopefully using the computer I already have.

At present if I open only 6 dining room tables on the 3D viewing window's grassy plain of a new and empty file and choose one it will not nudge it quickly around the landscape but will give it gentle little love taps at a rate of 45 nudges in 30 seconds.

Thanks also for the Notebook check link.

I checked my computer and my video card is the NVIDIA Quadro K3100M rather than the NVIDIA NVS 3100M.

Here's the comparison page from Notebookcheck.net of these two cards:

https://www.notebookchec..._4831_1622.247598.0.html

It looks like the Quadro that my machine contains has significantly more of various 'things' (I do not speak Tech, to my shame) than the NVS has:

768 vs 16 pipelines (what are pipelines? Wait, no need to tell me. I'll forget anyway).
4x the memory speed
256 Bit Memory bus width vs 64 bit
4 GB Max Memory vs 512 MB
3 and one-half billion (BILLION!) transistors (the mind boggles).

I also learned (thank you youtube) that I can install the NVIDIA Quadro K5100M GPU in this laptop ($260 on Amazon).

If the Quadro K3100M isn't up to V21 is the Quadro K5100M?

Thanks again, Pat, for your help.

You're welcome! Cool

I think that your best option is to contact a computer expert and ask for advice. Many stores as well as technical Forums will be able provide knowledgeable free advice.

I am just an Architect and a Punch user (since 2001), so my answers are based only on my experience.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again.

I will do that, and will try to update this thread as I learn more.
