Hi Dave,
I don't think that the adjustments are hit or miss => I believe that the settings must be adjusted accordingly with the project and its characteristics. For example: if you are developing an exterior image with a night sky, sun light and shadows must be removed, right? :-)
Daylight exterior images use to include sun light, and sometimes, this is enough. However, if it is an interior image, probably you will need to include additional ambient light.
Rooms facing sunlight will have different light settings.
3D effects may change the light settings or create bad reflections.
In other words, analyze the characteristics of your project and the desired effects in order to define the settings.
