Hi Peter Leonard,
probably, the staircase in not long enough for all the necessary number of steps Try to add 10 inches (for example) to the length and you'll see how the staircase geometry changes

So the length of the staircase is relative to the height?

Hi Peter Leonard,
Not exactly. Let me explain a little more about this issue
This happens because the ratio full height / steps is not balanced. This is how we (architects) design stairs in real life
You need to set the total staircase height and stretch the stairs until the riser height is equal than 7" (not less than 4") and tread width not less than 10' (10" also for curved stairs)(recommended dimensions by the building codes)
In other words, if your total height is 10' (120") 1 - To start--> Divide 120" / 7"--> approx, 17 steps. 2 - 17 steps mean (approx.) 17 x 10"--> 170"--> this means an extension of 170", and this (the extension) is the secret
In Punch, despite of the properties bar settings, the staircases calculation is not 100% automatic
Check the image attached I created two levels--> the upper floor is at 120". I created two stairs, in both, I used the height at 120", and the same steps' settings (7"and 10") At the bottom of the staircases, you can see the same specs--> 17R x 10"T , right? The green staircase has the right length (170") so if you count, there are 17 steps. However, the red staircase says 17 steps but if you count it has only 13 steps, because the extension is only 130"
In the right pane of the image, you can see that, in liveview, only the green staircase reaches to the 120"level, despite of the settings showed in the properties bar (for the green staircase)
(the image is from other version but the concept is the same)

Hi, Patricia, I am trying to make gently sloping stairs coming down my terrain outside. how do I change the slope of my stairs so that it gently slopes, instead of going at its 45 degree angle?

Kind of like the stairs in one of the four picture shown on the product page for this product. the picture with the pool in it.

Hi Peter Leonard,
Following the specs above Patricia G., "Staircase Questions" #3, 28 Aug 2009 10:37 am--> add length and set the steps' height at (for example) 6" Don't set the height in a very low value--> some building codes don't allow it and in addition, humans tend to rise the leg for the standard 7"--> so a very low / high value is not comfortable

Hi Peter Leonard
Yes, to modify the pitch, you need to play with the depth / height ratio --> 10 / 7 is = 1.43 ratio, if the number goes close to 2, the pitch is smooth, if the number goes close to 1, the pitch is steep

Alright. To change that ratio, I just keep experimenting with the two numbers in the info tab, right?

Also, Patricia, how do I make a pool (coincidentally; like the one in the picture mentioned above) and the walls around it. does that require a pool liner, or is the pool liner just another material? I am having trouble "excavating" land for the pool. when I do it, then it shows up in 3D with a piece of ground about 3' above the land, then a brown spot below that piece of ground. what is the matter?

Hi Peter Leonard
Correct. Modify the height / deep values

Hi Peter Leonard
As I am not a mac user, I am not sure what materials and tools you have. Sorry.... ;-)

But the basics of making a pool are to excavate a hole, then put a wall around it, then lower the wall to the excavation, and then... hold on. how am I supposed to fill a pool with water???? If i put in a fill section, it will look like dirt. Also, are there any ways to put fireplace chimmneys in?

Some notes regarding the winding staircase
A winding staircase means that it includes one or more winders --> the winders are steps wedge shaped and the thread is not a rectangle (one end is wider than the other)
So, an L stair or U stair or a curved stair, for example, are winding stairs
My suggestions is --> Go to the Detail Tab --> draw lines with the length and shape of each segment of the stair and convert them to stairs--> set height and elevation Or you can try to shape a curve as you can see in the image attached (developed with another version, but works in the same way)
