Hi Russell,

Let me explain some properties regarding the Punch objects.
The Punch programs have two types of objects: the POB files, developed with the 3D Custom Workshop Power Tool (present in the Windows versions) and the CWP files, developed with the 3D Custom Workshop Pro Power Tool (present in some Windows and Mac versions)
Most of the objects in the Punch libraries are POB files
As the Mac programs don't have the 3D Custom Workshop Power Tool, if you select a chair, for example, you can change the dimensions using the Inspector. But if in your Mac program (up to V17) you select an object created with the 3D Custom Workshop Pro Power Tool (a CWP file), you can right click on the object => Launch Custom Workshop Pro (or double click on the object) => the Power Tool will open, showing the object, ready to edit.

Thx so much for your reply (I don't know HOW you keep up with all us novices constantly barking on this forum!!!... amazing)

So... I gather from what you are saying, that the Mac version of 3DWP doesn't save Objects as CWP files, which is the format required to make Objects "tweakable" within HDSP?

Hi Russell,

You're welcome! :-)
Well, I use to answer fast because Punch chained my computer to the Forum.. (LOL) :-D (it happens that I am the Forum Moderator)(Volunteer)

Nope regarding the objects, is the other way around. Let's focus on Mac V17
1 - The Mac programs V17 have the 3D Custom Workshop Pro Power Tool
2 - The objects created with the 3D Custom Workshop Pro Power Tool are CWP files(CWP means Custom Workshop Pro)
3 - In the Mac programs, the CWP files can be fully edited (parts' modifications, size, etc.) by right clicking or double clicking the object => the CWP objects will open in the Power Tool.
4 - Objects in other formats (different from CWP) cannot be fully edited in the Mac programs => you can only change the dimensions using the Inspector.
As I know that you have my e-book, you can check the page 94 for additional info.

... interesting... thx for clarifying, Patricia...

So it would seem that I would need to jump back and forth between HDSP and CWP in order to tweak my original Object dimensions... each time saving my newly tweaked Object as a new (unique) Item (based on the fact that it won't allow you to simply "replace" an Item with the same name!) I see many people uploading Objects on the Punch Alternatives site... and those seem to be "tweakable" from within HDSP... These were probably created from the Windows Version of Custom Workshop Power Tool. Interesting that the Mac version still creates POB, POD and ppv files... but they don't behave the same as the file sets created by the Windows Version... (???)

Certainly the Mac versions have limitations if this is the case.

I assume this is NOT the case with the Windows versions... that Objects created in that environment behave as you would expect... and are tweakable from the Inspector window.

Is this also the case where implementing Transparency is concerned? Does the Mac version of CWP not embed transparency info into Objects for display in 3D?

... a lot of questions... sorry!

best,
Russell

Russell,

You're welcome! :-)

Some notes in order to clarify concepts and avoid confusions:

1 - You wrote: " the Mac version still creates POB, POD and ppv files" => Nope, the Mac versions and the 3D Custom Workshop Pro Power Tool don't create POB files.
2 - POD files are just text files that include the object information, so they are not a type of object. They are created automatically when you create an object. I think that POD means Punch Object Description
3 - ppv files are just the thumbnail, so they are not a type of object. They are created automatically when you create an object. I think that ppv means Punch preview
4 - The Mac programs include many POBs => you can change the dimensions but you can't edit the POB itself in a Mac V17 program .
5 - Transparency: with the object selected => use Window => Concept Explorer => Features => Double click on the object name=> Object Properties => Display.
6 - The Windows versions don't have an "Inspector". They work in a different way.

... thx again for the info!

So... personally... when you sit down to layout a detailed floorplan for a client... are you using the Mac version or Windows?

Russell,

you're welcome! :-)

Usually, is not my decision. Most of my customers want to enjoy Punch's 3D capabilities, therefore in all the situations, I send the finished Punch file, developed with the same program and version number that they have installed. Otherwise, the files won't open or will open with some issues.

This means that (for example), if my customer is using Punch Pro 14.2.3. for Windows, I will create the file with the same program, in my Windows computer. If my Customer is using Punch Complete for Mac 17.5, I will create the file with the same program, in my Mac computer.
BTW, I have the programs from version 4.5 to 17.5 ;-)

That makes sense from the standpoint of assisting clients with their existing Punch files... (and that'a a LOT versions to keep track of!)

I imagine, though, that you'd probably use the Windows Version if you were designing a house for a client from scratch (using it to help the client visualize the design) and they weren't using any software of their own... it just feels much less restrictive than the Mac version.

btw... I'm enjoying your e book...

Russell,

Glad to know that you are enjoying my e-book! :-D
If you read the pages about me, you know why I have all the Punch versions since 2001 ;-)

Not only to assist Punch users. Some of my "design from scratch customers" hire my services because I use Punch, so, again, I always use my customers' versions.
