Hi handcrafted,

You can't import a PDF file to Punch.
If we are talking about a floorplan, you can save or convert your PDF to jpg, bmp , etc(graphic formats) --> import this image as a trace file using Design--> Floor trace properties
You can do a screenshot and save the image as jpg, bmp, etc for tracing purposes

In the web, you will find several PDF to DWG converters --> if you can convert your floorplan, and then you can import the DWF file and convert the lines to walls, stairs, etc

I am not sure what do you mean by "switching from Punch to PDF file".
Do you mean print a Punch file to PDF --> if this is the issue --> follow this tutorial in my website
