Hi Dave,

Sounds like you have low computer resources or a very heavy file or both.

Check these answers / Options

1 - Hardware

You don't describe your video card, memory and processor specs and capabilities however, there are some basic parameters
- Onboard video cards and chipsets(almost all of them) have low performance for 3D / rendering purposes because they don't have dedicated memory
- Check if all the drivers and settings are updated

2 - Punch file

- If you are working with a heavy file, including lots of furniture, 3D objects, topo, lights, etc, the issue is more related with the file
- Perform this test: In an empty file, draw just a wall and try to paint it. If you have a issues with any Punch file (just a wall, for example), then probably, it is a hardware issue.
But even this, will depend of the computer / processor you have. All the elements work together as I stated above

3 - Tips
- Click on the pencil/plan icon (depending of your versions) at the top of the LiveView window (Render and Navigation Options). Clicking on the different icons you can disable temporarily the lights or 3D objects, or topo etc. This will help during the working process
- Try to apply the 3d objects (cabinets, furniture, etc), lights and topography at last
- You can turn off the "Undo" feature--> Edit--> Undo preferences. This will speed your work. Just remember to save frequently (because this step deactivates the autosave for backup feature)
- To get a good Punch performance, close other programs, including the e-mail. Perhaps, other programs are using resources otherwise required in Punch.

If you have additional questions, please include the title, version, and platform you are using. On the PC you will find this info in the main menu->Help->About… Also, post any information you have on your system (processor, video card, etc) as well as the size of your Punch file

If you have any of my e-books, search the keyword "polygon" to learn more about the effect of the objects in the performance (see links below) (the discount coupons are my Facebook page)

Hey everyone,

How do I add a simple chair rail with two different colours of paint on the walls above and below the chair?

Version: Punch Home and Landscaping 17.5, $50 green box.

See attached image.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Arthur,

In order to set a chair rail and / or use different textures on a wall => try these resources (I used all them in this image http://www.punchhelpers.com/residential14.html )

Say you have a wall with height 104", your wainscot height is 60" and your chair rail is 4"
1 - Create a wall with height= 64" => apply the wainscot or texture => apply the rail as crown molding. For the upper segment, create a wall with height= 40" and set the elevation @ 64" (it will be stacked on the 64" wall)

or

2- Create a wall with height= 60" => apply the wainscot or texture --> For the upper segment, create a wall with height= 44" and set the elevation @ 60" (it will be stacked on the 60" wall) => apply the rail as baseboard

Of course, you can create a rail using the 3D workshop and set it with the necessary dimensions / elevation.

I think that you tried to post an image => If you wish to post images => follow these steps:
- upload your picture to a free online photo album like Photobucket or Flickr or Picassa, for example
- Look for the link of your picture (usually, photo albums provide a "link for a forum" script) => copy the full URL => Paste the link in your post

I cannot select the object in 3D to apply texture or paint. When I try to use the 'select' (arrow) tool, it shows an arrow with a wall behind. No matter what object I try to select, it always apply against some wall. Really frustrated.....

Please advise what is the proper steps to apply texture or paint color to furniture or wall. There is no information at all from user guide or any where I can find......

Hi there,

You are not informing the title and version number of your Punch program, however all the User's guide are clear regarding how to apply colors / materials. You can search, for example, "To apply materials": for version 17.7, you will find this section at page 35 (User's guide)
Note that you don't need to select the object to apply the texture / color => just drag and drop the desired material or color on the desired surface

My version is v17.7 on Window. I have tried million times to drag and drop a paint color to the desired surface, nothing happened. Under the Undo, it did show, undo Color. But from 3D view, nothing is changed.

Another issue I found for building kitchen cabinet. I have followed the tutorial video for adding kitchen cabinet but the software totally behaved differently. I select the specific base cabinet and draw it to the 2D plan. But once I try to click on object after I created it, it turned back to the default countertop. No matter what type of cabinet I try to draw, they all end up to the default base countertop. Is this a known issue? It is really frustrated...:(

Hi there,

Punch, as any program, has a learning curve. The best way to learn the program, IMO, is practice + practice + practice.
Read and follow the manual (this is important), see the videos => try to create elements not related with your project, so you will become familiar with the commands and how to develop the different components.

Colors / materials => There are two separated issues (and it is very important to clarify the differences)

Issue type 1 - The textures going to the grass or the sky or other place --> this may be a videocard issue and it is independent of how or where you apply the texture.
Try these steps
1 - Check the website of your video card manufacturer and update the drivers

2 - Go to the video setup on your PC (may be different for different versions of Windows and video card); for most, click on an empty part of the windows Desktop, click on Settings->Advanced->Troubleshoot). Back the accelerations slider to the left, one level each time and see if the problem disappears. For Windows 7 --> Right Click on your desktop. --> Personalize --> display --> Change Display settings--> Advanced

3 - Right click on the wallpaper (look for a place without icons)--> Properties--> Settings--> Advanced--> Open GL--> Compatibility Settings--> Force 16 bits--> Apply--> OK

4 - Set your video color depth at 24 or 32 bits ("true color")

5 - Go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/179113 , and see what version is current and check if you have this version installed in your computer

6 - Some NVidia card users reported additional problems--> in this case change the color settings from 32 bit to 16 bit

Now, if you the accelerations controls are not available, this means that you don't have a dedicated memory for video. In this case, go to the control panel of your video chip / adapter --> performance --> move the control and set down the performance. This may help

You'll find several discussions about this here--> search with the keywords "black screen" or "frozen image" or "texture going to the grass" or "texture going to the sky" perform a search with the words "sky + texture" or "grass + texture"

Issue type 2 - There are few tricks to apply the textures
1 - Try to set the position of the little man close to the surface you wish to apply texture or color, however, you don't need to be on the floor to texture a floor, for example. If there are not interferences, you can even apply a texture from the chopper
2 - Never apply a texture or color through a window or door--> the windows' or doors' openings just render the surfaces as transparent, but the walls are still there
3 - If the room elevation is under the 0.00 level--> the little man elevation must be also under the 0.00 level
4 - Doors and windows-->apply the color / texture on the surfaces parallel with the wall where the door / window is installed

I don't know about any issue related with cabinets. Can you explain what do you mean by "it turned back to the default countertop"?

Try to detail the problem as specifically as possible, so we can understand the issue. Let us know exactly what you want to do, what you tried, what seems broken, etc.

If you wish to post images --> follow these steps:
- upload your picture to a free online photo album like Photobucket or Flickr or Picassa, for example
- Look for the link of your picture (usually, photo albums provide a "link for a forum" script) --> copy the full URL --> Paste the link in your post

Some issues can be related to hardware you are using. Please post any information you have on your system (operating system, video card, etc).

For drag and drop material to apply to an object, it will only work when I am with specific distance from the object in 3D mode, not too far, not too close.

And for creating kitchen cabinet, I just notice I need to select a wall for the cabinet to be created, not by dragging to the open space .....So, it works now.

I used this same program on this same computer last month for a different room and was able to drag and drop materials and paint with ease.. Now I have designed a different room and am having problems dragging and dropping. When I drag a solid fabric material to a chair, it says do you want to apply paint to all walls in the bathroom, or when I drag a patterned fabric to a different chair, if I click smart grouping, it may paint the refrigerator. Help!!

Hi there,

Some issues can be related to hardware you are using or the size of the file. As you didn't include the information about your system (motherboard, OS, video card, etc, I'd say that this sounds like a video card problem.

Try these resources:

1 - Check the website of your video card manufacturer and update the drivers

2 - Go to the video setup on your PC (may be different for different versions of Windows and video card); for most, click on an empty part of the windows Desktop, click on Settings -> Advanced -> Troubleshoot. Back the accelerations slider, one level each time and see if the problem disappears. For Windows 7 --> Right Click on your desktop. --> Personalize --> display --> Change Display settings--> Advanced

3 - Right click on the wallpaper (look for a place without icons)--> Properties--> Settings--> Advanced--> Open GL--> Compatibility Settings--> Force 16 bits--> Apply--> OK

4 - Set your video color depth at 24 or 32 bits ("true color")

5 - Go to www.microsoft.com/directx, and see what version is current and check if you have this version installed in your computer

This may help.
The new Punch V18.0.1 programs include an accelerations control.

You'll find several discussions about this issue here, at the Forum--> search with the keywords "black screen" or "frozen image" or "texture going to the grass" or "texture going to the sky"
