Rick,

The matrox video card you have installed in your computer is a PCI video card. This is the reason for being slow.

If you want more graphics speed you will need to have a PCI Express or AGP video card.

Latest drivers may help but at the end of day the performance with PCI will be poor and when you drawing gets more complex the computer may not be able to handle the 3D Graphics. The latest drivers for your video card are dated 03/10/2005 so you may want to give them a try.

Hi Rick,

I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (128 Mb), an ATI 7000 with 64 Mb in my notebook, and one Nvidia with 128 Mb in my second computer.
In my experience, the ATI's results are better, and I run Punch with full acceleration. In addition, the driver for the 9800 (Catalyst) offers a good performance and is updated aprox. once a month.

Hope this helps

Hi Patricia I,

No this card is definitely AGP but thanks for the advice.

My intention has always been to stay away from PCI.

Thanks

Rick

Hi Patricia,

Another thing I noticed recently is that on ASUS's website on video cards there isn't one reference to a Matrox card but lots for ATI's. So there may be a compatibility issue at the mobo level also.

I'm going to bring my P650 into my local retail store and have them test it. Maybe it's defective. If it isn't well it doesn't really solve my problem but at least I will have eliminated that possibility.

I think I will have to end up buying an ATI. I'm considering the 9550. My retailer suggests the Sapphire 9550. They say that other manufacturers who make the board but use the ATI chips often do a better/faster job than ATI.

What do you think about the Sapphire?

Thanks

Rick

Hi Lyle,

I think we're barking up the right tree. Something else I read (can't recall where) is that Matrox is a high end product mainly targeted at professional cad users, the medical profession etc and only added some OpenGL functionality to keep gamers happy.

Based on my experience, I would say they aren't doing a very good job.

Thanks

Rick

Hi Rick,

It depends. I never used Sapphire 9550, and in the site look like "the best". But you need to check how it works with your computer.

I tried to install a new video card in a HP computer. The card was OK, but a disaster in my HP system

Anyway, if you are using it only for Punch, Radeon 9550 is OK and it supports the Catalyst driver

Hope this helps
