Commercial buildings as any other building must follow the building code, including the fire department requirements and this is different for each county, state, etc
So, there are not "quick tips". Of course you'll need handicap access, ramps, fire equipments, etc.
Probably you will find more information (free) in the building department of your county
Try also the AIA (american Institute of Architects) library
