Your question has several answers:
1 - Compatibility: the Punch programs' compatibility works following the ascendant version number (actually is the sw industry standard). This means that old files are compatible with new versions but this doesn't work backwards
Therefore, a file elaborated with AS 3000 V12 can be opened with a V17.5 program, but a file elaborated with V17.5 (the current version) will not open with AS 3000 V12. In other words, you can't open your files created with the new version using AS 3000 V12
2 - Updates: all the updates for the past programs are in the patches and updates page
http://patches.punchsoftware.com/However, notice that, installing the V12 updates you will solve some V12 issues, but your program still will be a V12 program.
3 - Upgrades: the Punch upgrade versions are actually, the full new programs. They usually give a discount to past customers.
