Hi Mark,

This is a very common problem and it happens when you try to import a file with several layers or a "dirty" file.

I suggest to apply this tutorial

http://www.punchhelpers.com/acadtutorial.html

This tutorial is valid for AS 18, AS 3000, AS 4000 as well as MLP

If after the tutorial you can't import your file, just zip and send me the file, and I will be glad to check the file for you

Hi Patricia:

I'll check on this. The file came to me from my architect and I don't have Autocad. As soon as I can get back with him, I'll clean the file and see what happens.

Thanks much!

Best Regards, Mark

I am trying to work efficiently with my architect by exchanging drawings. He uses Autocad. My export to him was partially successful, but he struggled with anomalies, which took more time to fix than if he had drawn the plans from scratch.

He sent me a dwg, which AS 18 failed to import. In frustration I purchased TurboCad Designer 11 for $29.00. It successfully imports dwg files with Autocad layers intact.

From TurboCad I exported each floor as an separate dxf file with all layers and a few objects intact.

I imported those dxf files into AS18. However, AS 18 failed to maintain any layers or objects. So I ended up with just lines.

AS 18 utterly fails to meet my needs of being able to share files efficiently with my architect.

TurboCad, a $29 program, proves that it is possible to import DWG files and preserve AutoCad layers. So when does Punch plan to revise their import utility to do the same.

Even better would be for Punch to figure out how to maintain not only layers but also objects. Is this ability coming in a future update?

Hi,

as we discussed lots of times in this Forum, Turbocad or Autocad or Excel or Punch or a hammer are excellent tools, if you use them for the purpose they serve.
Turbocad is a good DWG sw, if your purpose is just import a DWG plan and see the plans' layers. However, if you wish to see the same floorplan in 3D, you need additional resources, right? Then, if you need 3D, Punch is the right tool and Turbocad is not
In addition, I guess you are using AS 18 V6. The DXF results of this version are poor. I'd suggest to upgrade to V8 at least

Regarding Punch's plans for future versions, I really don't know. We (people answering questions in the Forum) are just volunteers

Hope this helps

I have a landscape contractor that has asked for an autocad version be sent to him of a landscape design plan. Can I do this, and if so, how? I've sent him the plot plan in pdf already.

Hi there,

Assuming that your Punch plan is ready
For versions 12 or older use--> Power tools --> DXF / DWG Exporter
For version 14, 15 or 16 --> Use --> File--> Export --> DXF / DWG

Hi there, I included all the options in my answer because I didn't know your version Upgrade: the versions 14 and up are the Punch NexGen programs and they work differently If you plan to continue with the Architectural Series (AS) programs, you can check the Home and Landscape Design Architectural Series http://www.punchsoftware.com/p-3-home-and-landscape-design-architectural-series.aspx Patricia

Thanks for your reply Patricia. However, I'm still confused. Are you recommending that I upgrade to the Home and Landscape NexGen version? Can I upgrade to this? Or do I need to purchase a whole different software package? Also, the ViaCad isn't recommended for landscape design purposes? Help!

Hi there,

Via Cad is a CAD program, not a home design program
As I don't work for Punch, I can't say if they will upgrade your V12 program or if you need to buy a new package. I think that it would be a good idea if you contact directly with Punch
http://support.encore.com/
BTW, there will be 2 new releases for the next days -->
- Home & Landscape Design Pro V3 (will be released by 07/20)
http://www.punchsoftware...fessional-nexgen-v3.aspx
- Home and Landscape Design Architectural Series V3 (will be released by 08/01)
