Hi Max W,

You can import DWG files in the Punch main program and convert the lines and shapes into walls, fences, etc. However, you can't "convert to" topography elements or import the file to the Topo designer

The only way to trace the topo elements is:
Step 1--> Save As your DWG file as bmp, or jpg or other image format
Step 2--> open the Topo Designer (power tool)--> Design--> Load Topography trace image--> resize if necessary--> you can use also the last icon of the snap bar (right of the screen, in a green rectangle in the image attached)--> the trace menu will open--> you can resize, flip, etc
Step 3--> to reposition the image in the lot--> In the trace image menu--> click the last icon, Offset image--> using the bars, you can move the image to a different position

Hope this helps

Hi

As I stated in my post above, to reposition the topography trace after you load the image--> open the the trace image menu--> click the last icon, Offset image--> using the bars, you can move the image to a different position

I need to convert my surveyor's topo map (dxf/dwg format) to something I can use (i.e., view and manipulate) right away, not spend hours of tedium tracing what's already in a digital format and accurate. I found that I can import these files, but then I can't do anything with them. I expected (when I bought this tool) that I would be able to import my topo map, and, with a LITTLE bit of work get a 3D rendering that I could manipulate with what's marketed as a great set of CAD tools. At the very least, I would expect to be able to click on one or more line segments that make up a contour line in my imported drawing, indicate its altitude and have those lines define my topography. What are the plans for getting the dxf/dwg import facility into a more usable form? Is this something I could hack? Is the Punch topo format something for which I could write a conversion script? Thanks for your help, Steve

Hi Steve,

We (people answering questions at the Forum) are volunteers, we are not Punch employees, therefore we don't know Punch plans for the future

The DWG / DXF feature is useful for the building elements. The "convert to" feature is reserved for the elements of the main program and not for the Power Tools, as is the case of the Topo elements

In my opinion, there are good reasons for this. Usually, the CAD topo plans are developed with small segments and not with curves as entire lines. This means a big problem for the Punch conversion, because, when you import them in Punch, those small segments are not interpreted (in Punch) as a curve and the distortion is huge.
You will agree that accuracy is important
A second reason is clear for the "Old Punchers" :-) as myself
Using Punch AS 3000 V7, for example, it was possible to import a curve and convert it in a Topo element, as you are asking. And each element was self defined in terms of height. But starting with the V8 programs, the height of a topo element is defined by difference
This means that if you have a berm with h= 30" this will mean +30" if it is resting on a 0" pad, or -45" if it is resting on a -75" pad
To do this, you should enter all the info in the the Topo designer and generate the topography, a more complicated process than just a conversion

Hope this helps

I am having problems importing a PDF file that has my survey into Punch Topo Designer. When I follow the promps to import a trace image I am OK until I get to step 3 when I click on the file it defaults to a message that say it can't find the file or the file has been deleted. The 4th step in the users guide says to "Click OK". However, there is not an "OK" button on the Open dialog box. I am hoping that someone can help me with this,

Hi Mark Goldberg,

Actually, the Punch message is not explaining the issue accurately

The real problem is the file format--> Punch doesn't recognize the PDF format for importing purposes (trace image, Photoview, etc)
In the Load file screen, if you use the option "All files" for the format, all the format files in your computer will appear, however, this doesn't mean that you can import all them in Punch. Click on the arrow, at the right of "All files" and you will be able to see the available formats (see attached)

Anyway, you can convert your PDF file (all or a part of it) to one of the Punch formats
Just open it with Adobe Acrobat reader--> select--> copy to clipboard--> open MSPaint (or other graphic program) --> Paste--> Save As--> JPG, or BMP, etc

Hope this helps
