I may be dense but try as I might I can not get a 3d display of the shading effects of a nearby building nor of overhangs in my design from the sun at different times of day or year.
The tutorial on lighting concentrates on internal effects and there appears to be no help on how to render external shading.
Can anyone help please?

Hi Chris Boyton,
Using AS 4000 V10 and up there are two different places to adjust the sun / shadows settings 1 - The GSP power tool where you adjust the settings of your location / time of the day, etc 2 - In the Liveview screen--> clicking on the sun icon (lighting) you can set the sun position, angle etc
Now, if you set the sun position and angle using the option # 1 and immediately you render your image in liveview, the shadows will be exact for that location, time etc. But if, after you set # 1, you make changes using option # 2, Punch will use # 2 instead of # 1. In other words, option #1 sets automatically the parameters of the tool mentioned in option # 2
There are some elements that prevent the shadows' generation - If you have a Photoview image in front of the sun - Some topo entities (for example, an excavation)
If the above items don't solve the issue, send me your file and I'll check it
