This is happening because the plan is not absolutely "clean", so this is the first step. You can learn how to prepare your file with this tutorial

Sometimes the CAD plans have hidden layers with external references, and Punch can't distinguish between the real plan and the references, then the DWG importer tool will import all. This is why your plan looks small

When I import it, the image does not appear within the white "box." Instead, it appears off to the right, within the gray background. When the view "zoom" is set at 1%, the image is visible; at 10%, it does magnify the image, but I have to search around the screen to locate it; at 25%, the gray area where the image is located is chopped off. Obviously, the image needs to be within the white box, but I can't figure out any way to move it there.

Yes, it happens because the file is not clean, as I stated above and also by e-mail
I checked your file and I found 2 problems: the cleaning and the fact that there are 2 plans in the same file
Both can be solved following my tutorial

Free CAD programs are available in the web, you will find many at download.com

Kitchen cabinet manufacturer supplied CAD drawings will not open. Error message is " Punch! DXF Importer supports up to version 2004 files". What is this? It is almost 2007 and AutoCad does update their program regularly. I can email cabinet CAD drawing if anyone can help. Bernie

Hi Bernie Bartko,

Regading your message
- Not all the error messages in a sw report exactly the situation. In some cases (as the one you are reporting) when the software operator makes a mistake, as the sw doesn't understand the request, the sw interpretation is: the file must be in an older version
- Punch is not a CAD plugin and it is not related with Autocad, therefore I don't see why Punch must follow the last Autocad version. An interesting feature, indeed, but the CAD programs have a feature called "Save As", allowing the conversion of the files to older versions, R12 included. Some of them are free. Bentley.com has a free conversion app.

Now, if you wish to discuss technical issues:
- The DXF / DWG importer tool is intended to import CAD plans and convert lines to walls, roofs, etc, but unfortunately, it doesn't convert to cabinets.
- In addition, the DXF / DWG importer tool, works only with CAD 2D files. I downloaded / opened a Kraftmaid cabinet file and it is a 3D file. If you check the image attached, in the CAD file you will see the positions / shapes of the UCS Icon and the cursor (outlined in red), these are indicators of 3D files, so you can't import them in Punch

Therefore, as you are trying to import the wrong type of file (3D instead of 2D) and Punch is not understanding this file, it reports the error as a version problem

Now, if you wish to import a 3D cabinet, please, follow this tutorial

Patricia, Thanks for the help. What you describe is exactly what I was trying to do, Import KraftMaid cabinets into a kitchen reno project concept. I thought this procedure would be much simpler and more accurate than drafting my own cabinets from scratch. Of course I was hoping that it would not involve modifying KraftMaids drawings myself. I will follow your suggestions. Bernie

Hello Patricia, I downloaded Bentley View XM Edition this morning and it opens the KraftMaid .dwg file OK in a wireframe view. I can rotate & move but not save. There does not appear to be any choice to save to 3DS. Do you have any other suggestions to convert to 3DS? Thanks Bernie

If you read my sentence carefully, I wrote

Of course, I am answering your request about conversions between CAD versions. I didn't mention the 3ds conversion in this paragraph
The Bentley View is a viewer and doesn't perform any type of 3DS conversion

Regarding the programs converting CAD 3D to 3Ds, there are many in the web, however I don't know of a free sw. And usually the demo versions don't allow to save the models.
