Hi Scott,

Lets take each problem individually

- The 3D Workshop PT imports only 3D objects in 3DS format. 2D objects can't be imported. However, you can (in CAD) assign a thickness (as 1/16") to the object --> export it as 3DS --> import it in Punch
- For some reason, 3D DXF objects exported from the 3DW doesn't import in Autocad, however, they work nice in other CAD programs
- The error message appears when you are trying to import a very "complicated" object (of course, complicated for the 3DW parameters). Try to limit the number of polygons

Let us know if you need additional assistance

Hi Patricia, Appreciate your help! Let's take this a little deeper.. Point 1 - 2D vs 3D import funtionality into 3DWS already crossed my mind so I tried both ways when testing. Results were the same two errors that I reported. Point 2 - I assumed 3DWS's DXF export algorithms were different (old code migrated from previous versions) than the DFX import/export PT's which would explain the anomalies. It's inconvenient but you can work around it to some extent using Symbol Editor or Section Detailer. Point 3 - Correct me if I'm wrong but a square wireframe box shouldn't be too complicated of an object to import into 3DWS should it? My test scenarios includes the following steps: * File created from Autocad 2000 with sp2 update. 1. 3ft x 3ft x 3ft 3D box created in Autocad 2000 (size doesn't seem to make any difference) 2. Set Line Weight to default (tried .062 also) 3. Set Mesh Closed (tried Open also) 4. Export as 3ds 5 Import 3ds file into 3DWS 6. BOOM! "Exception Error" or "An error was detected while running the 3DS Conversion Tool.". * File created from 3DWS 1. 3ft x 3ft x 3ft 3D box created in 3DWS (size doesn't seem to make any difference) 2. Export as 3D DXF (tried 2D DXF also) 3. Import into Symbol Editor 4. Exported as DXF 5. DXF file Imported into Autocad 2000 6. Set Line Weight to default (tried .062 also) 7. Join Polylines 8. Set Mesh Closed (tried Open also) 9. Export as 3ds 10. Import 3ds file into 3DWS 11. BOOM! "Exception Error" or "An error was detected while running the 3DS Conversion Tool.". Do you have any other suggestions I might try? Thank you, - Scott

Scott,

Some notes,

First and very important--> The DXF / DWG importer Power Tool as well as the Section Detailer and the Symbol Editor are intended to import 2D CAD and they are not related with the 3D workshop or the 3DS files. If you wish to use them to create a 2D floor texture, for example, is fine. Just notice that the file will be very heavy

I don't know all your configs, patches, etc in Autocad 2000 or in your computer
The objects in this image (with exception of the chair) were developed as 3DS objects and imported in Punch, following my tutorial
http://www.punchhelpers.com/3dsfiles.html

In my experience, the problem is in the morphology of the polygons
I'd suggest that you check your Autocad settings for the steps in my tutorial
If you wish, e-mail me and I will be glad to check the objects with you
