Processors--> Punch claims that AS 5000 works with "dual-core processors and those with Hyper-Threading Technology (are) supported". However, after a week of research + a discussion with a Dell representative + an AMD representative, I am under the impression that (just for Punch purposes) one (strong) processor is, perhaps, better than two In addition, I must say (for the first time!!) a word against ATI Radeon / Catalyst Last week I updated my Catalyst driver to version 7.12, released on 20/12. As always, I followed the instructions strictly. Then, I started to work in Punch and... the textures went to the sky, the texture dropper didn't work and so on. I tried several resources (uninstall / install, safe mode, etc), without success I turned down the accelerations and it worked, but partially. I checked with ATI and looks like they made some "changes" in this release. I re installed my old driver and all works OK now, with full accelerations. Therefore, my recommendations are to be careful with the Catalyst updates and to keep a copy of the old drivers!!! (by the way, a Restore point didn't solve the problem) Patricia |

I just received the official answer from AMD Customer Care for ATI products, regarding the Catalyst driver issue "This is a problem of our new drivers. On some specific chipset configurations, they don't work with AGP cards well. With these drivers all the DirectX functionality is gone. Please download and use Catalyst 7.7 as they seem to work flawless. Also try to look for updated chipset drivers from your motherboard manufacturer. Please remember to uninstall all the previously installed ATI drivers/software before installing the new one!" Hope this helps Patricia |

Thanks so much, Lyle and Patricia- you both deserve awards for your responsiveness to so many issues! After speaking to the Punch folks, I've learned that the video card is really what "drives" the software, since all the rendering processes depend on the video card. And, the more complex the drawing, the more robust of a card you'll need. And after talking to the Dell folks, it sounds like the vc in the system I got is more of a gamer's card...so I'm going to upgrade the system another notch and get a more robust vc (the ATI X1950 vs ATI HD2400- i.e., the high-end of the old vs. the low-end of the new). I'll let folks know how it works when I get it!

Hi tamshere, Glad to know the answer helped :-) Last week, my ATI Radeon 9800 crashed. So.... I did a little research about VCs, and yes, as you stated, there are lots of VC cards in the market "ready for games ". I found (and bought) an ATI VC 9550, they call it a "3D graphics card". It uses the Catalyst driver and I am extremely glad with the results of my new VC card Just two notes - If you don't have an LCD monitor, a High Definition card (like the HD2400) will not make any difference - Check in advance the Power Supply of your PC, the ATI's 512 Mb cards need 300 W Let us know about you new card, so we can learn more!! Patricia: Indirectly you are answering my early inquiries about the problem I had with my ATI Sapphire HD 2600 XT. I was wondering Punch team could take this issue of mine and give me some answer, but I did not get anything. Now, I had my previous video card installed and for now I have lost my purchase. So, could you please give me a last opinion about the problem I had? I mean, should I install again my new ATI Sapphire HD 2600 XT video card? And what driver should I use? What I am wondering is to have the best video to work with. My motherboard is an Intel core dos duo 2.13 with 4 G RAM. SATA drives. Please tell me if you need to know something about my PC for a better answering. Regards, Carlos Schorr

Hi Carlos, I am not sure what problem you had... Anyway, it is hard to say which is the best video card for your computer. As I stated, I use ATI cards and I am happy, but this is just my opinion, for my computer As example--> few weeks ago, one of my Customers (overseas) set a new computer, almost identical to my system.... but it didn't work perfectly. Why? because his MS Windows was not in English so there were interferences among the drivers Perhaps you have some drivers in Spanish and this may cause interferences? (I am just guessing) Patricia |

But, is there any issue with HT processors and some new ATI video cards? During the time I had installed that ATI card I could not get features into the rendered image, such as pick an object or a finishing color etc, so I had to deinstall that ATI and go back with the my old ATI and with old drivers because newes drivers did not work having the same problem as with my new ATI card. That was my problem.
