Hi lsolo
In my opinion, the focus of the CAD packages is on drawing, the Home Design programs (like Punch) are focused on design. This means that if you draw a rectangle in CAD, this could be a wall, or a machine, or just a rectangle. In Punch, a wall means a wall, it will have all the properties of a wall and you'll see a wall in 3D.
The difference is the program's capability to understand what you are drawing.
On the other side, when you need to define a building detail with precision, or to elaborate a piece to be executed, probably a CAD program will offer more resources.
Also, notice that Autocad does not render by itself, and you will need additional rendering programs to elaborate 3D (and they are very expensive!!).
Hope this helps

What you said helps to confirm for me something I have been thinking myself but was reluctant to express because I am "just" a student. I am still learning the ropes of design, but I consider myself to be fairly computer literate. It seems to me that the design industry lags behind other industries in its use of and knowledge about computers. Design firms' efficiency could be greatly improved if they would be open to exploring the CAD software packages that have come out since the inception of AutoCad.
Are you a professional designer? I would love to learn a little about your experiences in the field.
