I'm attempting to use retaining walls to build planters and such for my front yard which is partly sloped and partly excavated, which means some of the small retaining walls step down. It's really not a big deal though it does bug me, but I can't get consistent results with the edges of the step downs. Sometimes it retains the material I apply and some don't. The attachment below shows a view of the wall edge where you can see the steps down. What I did to achieve this is add nodes to the wall and change the height of each section. How should I be doing this so the edge isn't naked like in this screen shot? Wall Steps.JPG (58kb) downloaded 4 time(s).

Hi there,
Get a closer view of the side of the walls => apply the texture on the edges.
Hope this helps. |

Hope this helps. Thanks Patricia! I had an ancient version of Punch! years ago so I'm admittedly hacking through this, trying to use what tutorials and help file info I can find so I may be creating these step downs wrong because I am not able to get the texture to apply to those areas. The way I'm stepping down is to create the retaining wall at full length, add nodes and then adjust the height of each section, dropping their height at each step. Perhaps that's doing something unusual to the wall where the texture can't be applied? Here's a closer look at what I'm doing (attachment). Wall Steps1.JPG (113kb) downloaded 3 time(s).

This is the current version, so I am not sure what do you mean regarding the ancient version.
In order to apply the texture => did you try to get really close to these walls?
Are these walls under the 0" level?

Sorry, I was referring to my Punch software skills. I used Punch many years ago on an early version and that's the last experience I had before now, using this current version. Yes, the walls are below 0. The foundation is at 0 and everything else is below. I'm not sure I understand how that would affect the edge of the retaining walls, but should I raise the foundation and slope down to something that's not below 0? I did get very close but will try to get even closer. Thanks again.

Hi there, Originally Posted by: BSavage Yes, the walls are below 0. The foundation is at 0 and everything else is below. Then, this is the issue. If the walls' elevation are below the 0.00" level, in order to apply the texture, the Yellow Man elevation must be also below the 0.00" level (double click on the Yellow man to set the negative elevation). If you prefer, you can use the mouse => the right button will change the elevation of the little man up and down. If you are interested, this is the link for the V20 eBook for Windows. My eBook includes several tutorials about starting and developing a project, setting elevations, etc. Hope this helps. |

My eBook includes several tutorials about starting and developing a project, setting elevations, etc. Hope this helps. Hello again Patricia, Thanks again for all the guidance. I set the elevation of the view (yellow man) below zero but with the same results. Perhaps I'm asking the wrong question. How would you go about creating a retaining wall that stepped up or down? In the three attached screen shots I've created a length (this time above zero elevation). From there I add nodes to the length. Next I am selecting individual wall segments and then setting the height. Using this method is seemingly leaving a naked/open edge that's not recognized as part of the wall, although I've looked at your renderings so there's obviously a way to do this, which means I'm not doing it right. :) Thanks for the link. I've already punch-retaining-wall2.JPG (35kb) downloaded 4 time(s). punch-retaining-wall1.JPG (27kb) downloaded 2 time(s). punch-retaining-wall3.JPG (43kb) downloaded 1 time(s). been eyeing your ebook!

Hi there,
It can be happening for a number of reasons, but I'd suggest that you create / texture the segments separately and then move / elevate to the correct location.
Hope this helps. |

Apparently you can't create one long wall, add nodes, change the height of each segment and then texture (the program doesn't know what to do with that one edge). I created three completely separate segments, textured and then moved them together and the edges are fine. That's a bit more work than the way I was doing it but works so that's what I'll do going forward. Thanks again, Patricia. punch-retaining-wall4.JPG (78kb) downloaded 1 time(s).

You're welcome! Keep in mind that in Punch, different systems show different results. |
