Hi, everyone. I'm trying to create a simple structure (bunk houses), but I'm pulling my hair out over the details in Punch Home & Landscape Design Professional (v24.0.0.2013). We have volunteers arriving in 11 days to build the bunk houses. I'm in North Carolina near Asheville where the hurricane came through and destroyed the existing bunk houses. I'm just trying to create a simple drawing to help create a list of materials needed as well as give a general sense of size, shape dimensions, etc.

As mentioned above, the structure is a bunk house for a campground, and 5 of these will be built (all identical). The details are as follows:

1) The bunkhouse will be 16 feet by 24 feet in size with 2x4 exterior walls. Each bunk house will have 5 sets of bunk beds for campers.
2) No interior walls will be built--the floor plan is completely open.
3) The roof will be a simple 4:12 pitch gable roof with a 1-foot overhang. The roof will extend 7 feet out of the front (the 16-foot width side) to cover a 6-foot deck and a 1-foot overhang.
4) The entire structure will rest on 6"x6" posts in an 8-foot grid (12 posts in total). This eliminates the need for grading sites flat or building a crawl space (as well as avoid drainage issues). The site is on the side of a hill
5) There will be one front door and one window in the back

That's pretty-much it. Simple. I have the building drawn as well as the roof, and the deck is also shown. Here are my problems:

1) I can't figure out how to show framing for the floor. All it shows is a slab no matter what I do. I have the building elevated above the ground, and even after adding "piers" it still doesn't show the floor framing.
2) I need posts (6" x 6") to go up to the roof overhang in the front to support the roof where it covers the deck. No idea how to do this. I would also like to show 6x6's for the piers, but again, I don't see how to do this.

Any help would be appreciated!

By clicking on the exterior side of the perimeter walls, a yellow band will be created around the walls (pointed with a green arrow in the image below) => the Properties tab menu allows the modification / customization of the Slab Framing materials.

Use the elements of the Framing tab. Visualize and render using Framing mode.

Hope this helps

Hi! Thank you for your reply.

I didn't see any images included with your reply that you mentioned... do I need to do something to make them visible?

Under the framing tab I found the wooden "framing support column" and how to change it to wood. The elevations are a bit confusing, but I'll tinker with it to see if I can get it to work.

That brings me to the floor framing. It still looks like a slab, and I can't find anything to change it. I click on the wall and it turns yellow, but the only options that are shown are for modifying the wall. Am I supposed to be under a certain tab when I do this? I was in the framing tab and that's all that shows up. Never mind! FINALLY got it. I had to zoom in to click the very edge and changed it to wood. Terrific!!!

Where do I go to change the size of the framing members? They're currently 2x4's and I want to use 2x10. Also, how do I add additional framing members? I need to double up some of the 2x10's where they will be resting on the 6x6 columns.

Thank you for your help!!

Hi there,

Sometimes, old album images don't load in the posts .
Anyway, I created a new image with additional information to answer your second post => you can see how the yellow appears and activates the Property Bar (pointed with a green arrow). Then, when you click on the Slab Framing button (outlined in blue), it opens the Auto-Foundation Framing menu (pointed in red), where you can set the materials and dimensions.

Slab Framing.jpg (47kb) downloaded 1 time(s).

When you select a component => the Property Bar is activated. In this case, go to the Framing tab select the component => set the properties in the Property Bar.

Punch, as any program, has a learning curve. The best way to learn the program, IMO, is practice + practice + practice => Read and follow the manual (this is important), see the videos => In order to get started, try to create elements or a simple plan not related with your project, so you will become familiar with the commands and how to manage the different components and solutions.

If you are interested, my eBook for Punch V24 includes all the features, lots of tutorials, screen guides, examples, how-tos as well as images for each setting. In addition, it includes a full chapters about Framing and Structures.

Hope this helps.

Patricia--

Thank you for all of your help.

I've looked at several videos, used Google search, etc., but I still can't find a way to change the depth of the framing members in the floor. When I click on the floor the "thickness" is 1/2". I'm assuming this is the floor COVERING (tile, hardwood floor, etc.). I need to change the depth of the floor framing to 2"x10" members. Right now it seems to be 2"x4", which is inadequate. Any idea where I can find this?

Sorry--when I click on the floor is shows "Depth" which is 1/2". Not thickness. Again--I need to change the depth of the floor joists to 10".

Hi there,

You must define the floor thickness in the Project Setup menu or using the Working Floor button. Visualize in Framing mode.

Hope this helps

Okay... this is really non-intuitive. I finally found "framing joist" under the framing tab, and I created a floor framing for the first (and only) floor. However, I have the original "floor" with the 2x4 framing still showing. How do I get rid of it? Typically, you have your floor framing (which I just did), subfloor as plywood, and then you build your wall framing on top of this. That's all I need. Floor framing, subfloor and the walls on top of that. I also need to put plywood as the interior wall finish as well as exterior wall finish.

The reason I bought the software was so it could tell me how many 2x4's I need, how many 2x10's I need, how many 6x6 posts I need and how many sheets of plywood I need. Can this software do that? I just don't have time to sit down and watch hours of videos to find that this software can't do what I need it to do. Thanks!

I'm glad to hear that it can do everything I need. Now to just figure out how to do it... Confused

I spent a couple of hours trying to get the floor to show just the framing and not the 3" wooden members. These are the "floor" members that were automatically generated. I made a floor framing with 2x10's--that's what I want shown for the floor. I also want to add cross members across the 6x6 posts.

Finally, how do I add 4x8 sheets of plywood to the interior/exterior walls and floor? I'll try to upload what I have thus-far. Bunkhouse Rendering - Framing.png (517kb) downloaded 1 time(s).

For some reason the files aren't uploading even though they're fairly small. I had to close the upload box manually.

In any case, any insights would be very helpful.

You are correct. The setup define the floor joist and this is how is looks.

Hope this helps.
