Architectural V.24
I have many hours into this particular drawing. I wanted to render a night-time photo of the house lights reflecting off the rear pond. I changed my background to a dark, starry night. Changed my global time from 1 PM to 1 AM. Started the final render and realized it was too dark so I saved and shut down.

When I re-opened the file the next day, there where black surfaces in place of materials where the Sun's original shadow was cast. These include roof shingles, wooden soffit, 1-side of 3 posts that never see sun on any sides, 1 quadrant of a patio umbrella, etc...
Un-rendered Martin Res.JPG (71kb) downloaded 5 time(s).

Applying material to the surface does not change in working view, however, the surfaces render properly.
Rendered Martin Res.JPG (36kb) downloaded 3 time(s).

Rendering to view each change isn't a viable option. I have reverted the Global time settings, tried to replicate the night-time settings with no luck. I could use any suggestions, please!

Hi there,

You questions have several answers, so let's review some photorealistic rendering concepts first:

1 - Independently of the time of the day, one of the most important rendering concepts is the definition of your own and necessary lighting settings. Go to => 3D => Photo realistic rendering => Lighting => you will find 3 different folders / types with several settings, heights, angles, intensity, etc. You can use or remove all the light types or just some of them.
For night scenes, I'd recommend to remove the sun / shadows settings. In your night image, I can see shadows, therefore the sun is present. You can add lights for more effect.
See an example attached.

Not sure why not. You can preview the scene to verify the settings => Save 3D Views -> save these settings and open them when desired.

3 - An additional note regarding your images: check the elevations and backgrounds. Notice that the pathway is floating.

Night image.jpg (63kb) downloaded 1 time(s).

Hope this helps.

Hi Patricia,
Both of my previous pictures were overcast daytime photos from the same angle. 1 un-rendered and 1 rendered.
Originally, I changed my Global Sun Position to AM from PM and turned off all sources of light except the house lights to make it dark out (rural property). I cannot find a setting specifically for shadows but I feel I glitched my matrix by changing Global Sun Positioning settings. I have reverted all settings and tried to render from multiple angles with the sun at every angle, changed my True North settings but these shadows remain in the un-rendered image (working view). If I copy an unaffected roof panel and flip it, that surface also goes black. Why are there only shadows on these surfaces and none others in an unrendered view? Shadows don't normally show unrendered so any changes in rendering settings seem to be inaffective.
Again, the rendered view is fine (if you don't look at the floaty pathways Blink ). I left topography until the end... Which I don't endorse, AT ALL! This is a 4 acre lot with a ton of topographical changes.

I can provide exact settings for time zone, location, time of day, sunlight-skylight-HDRI, etc. if anyone wants to lab test and replicate my butchery.
I really appreciate your feedback and any further suggestions will be accepted

Fixed!
3D...3D Rendering>>>Rendering Options>>>3D Preferences>>>Lighting
I turned off sunlight, sun shadows, adjusted the intensity and brightness. Saved those settings and it fixed itself. I turned shadows and sunlight back on and the black surfaces are gone.
I am sorry Patricia, I obviously changed to 3D rendering the evening this started. I have been fumbling through the Photo-Realistic Rendering settings with you.
Note: Don't stay up until 4 am on Punch! It makes it hard to remember the changes we make.Sleep

I replicated the situation in Photo-realistic mode. i turned off sunlight, skylight and HDRI. Moved to Global Sun Position and set my clock to 1 am. Rendered it. I undid the above settings and the shadowed surfaces went black in my daytime view.
The quick fix for me the second time was to switch to 3D Rendering and now under Lighting is an option to adjust lighting to daytime and my materials came back.
I still feel it is a bit of a glitch but one that can be resolved.
Cheers!

Hi there,

Not a glitch. Unless you save new rendering settings, the program will use the last you saved.

Punch, as any program, has a learning curve. The best way to learn the program, IMO, is practice + practice + practice => Read and follow the manual (this is important), see the videos => In order to get started, try to create elements or a simple plan not related with your project, so you will become familiar with the commands and how to manage the different components and solutions.

If you are interested, my eBook for Punch V24 includes all the features, lots of tutorials, screen guides, examples as well as images for each setting.

Hope this helps.
