Hi Linda I'm kind of new to Punch myself - 6 months. I hate to say this so simply but Vista doesn't work. I bought a new computer about 6 months ago ( a hewlett packard ) from Best Buy. It didn't work and I'm a programmer of sorts ( used to be ). Fortunately Best Buy took it back and I went back to XP. The rendering problem ( an hour ) I have not had such a problem. Mine works rather quickly. I have the 4000 series. I see though that the Punch software is junk. I use AutoCad for the structural and the Punch for just the pretty picture which, it does rather well. It is simple and doesn't do much and with a lot of short comings, but what it does do, I found it does rather well. Just don't expect a lot from it. After all it is only a couple hundred bucks. My AutoCad was $4,500.00. It does a lot, but it doesn't crank out a quick simple 3D picture. Punch provides a 'Punch University' on line for $47. I got it and it is well worth the $47. Time is money! So instead of hunting and pecking with the manual, The Punch University gets you up to speed quickly. I recommend it. Good luck Linda Robert

Hi Linda,

Some notes and ideas

- Dropped ceilings--> draw a flat ceiling using the floor tool--> "cut" a hole using the floor cut tool (both tools are in the floor tab)--> go to the Roofing tab--> draw a freehand roof to cover the hole--> set the pitch as 0:12 (don't use floor to cover the hole because it may look odd in 3D)--> texture as necessary

- The walls in Punch have not side cover, this is why you can't add a trim. Try this work around--> say you need a wall with thickness= 6"--> draw a set of two paralell 2" walls with 2"between them--> close the ends with perpendicular walls (in other words, close the perimeter)--> adjust the dimensions--> texture and add trims as necessary

- Angled Neo Shower--> this corner shower is not a complicated task. Go to Objects--> Bathroom--> Fixtures--> the 12th object is a corner shower. If you wish to use glazed walls--> open it in the 3D workshop--> select the object--> Edit--> ungroup--> select the walls--> texture as necessary--> Properties bar--> Translucency button--> set the transparency of the shower walls--> Save to the library or close the workshop accepting the changes

- Rendering time--> some Vista users are running Punch in compatibility mode (to Windows XP) and getting a best rendering speed.

- Printing: you can get great results and speed the printing process using a PDF writer. Check this tutorial

Hope this helps

Hi Linda You should upgrade to 'Series 4000'. There is a floor tool which is the ceiling also and you can set multiple ceilings at different elevations. Whether there is a 'suspended ceiling tile' pattern or not, I don't know. I'm sure you could use one of many available patterns to accomodate this, but the actual physical ceiling structure at whatever elevation will exist. I do like the software, but realize it is simple software. Bye again Robert

Hi Robert (and Linda)

The Punch tools to develop a ceiling (with the floor tool or 3D workshop) are the same for Punch Platinum (all versions), AS 3000 (all versions), AS 4000 (all versions), Professional, MLP (all versions) and Punch Interiors
The only version with a special Power Tool to develop ceilings is Punch AS 5000

Any new suggestions on how to have the preview pix show up in the side column. Workshop items appear to be saving but the preview is only a black or blue square. Is there a trick to set up the view in workshop so that it actually takes a pix of the item being saved ?

Hi Juniper,

I saw the empty thumb issue trying to save large (in kb) objects. The automatic thumb is a sort of screenshot, so if the screen is blank / blue during the "picture time" , the thumbnail will be blank / blue
"Save to library" again with the same settings (and without closing the 3D workshop). This step usually helps
Important note--> in order to generate the preview images, you must "Save to library" (don't use "Save As")
If your version doesn't generate the thumb, you can follow these RB's instructions

I'm using Professional Home Design Platinum v 12 Some of the objects saved are furniture pieces but not greatly complex - others are simple shapes ie. wall paper borders (simple rectangle) Program is basically used to reproduce rooms and objects from our own home to test placement and sizes of objects in rooms. Open to suggestion for another Punch program that might be more user friendly and not too costly.
