Hi Sue Johnson,

(All the instructions below are referred to the 3D workshop Power Tool)

To extrude objects (one or a group of them) you should check the grids--> the object will extrude with reference to the perpendicular grid
You can see a step by step tutorial about this subject in this post

Regarding the nudge issue, I'd suggest to deactivate the snap to grid function. Be sure you set Options--> Precision as inches
You can use also Edit--> Duplicate--> Duplicate properties--> set the exact distance

If these settings don't work, email me your pattern and I will set it for you
