Hi Alan,

Usually, the stud scrap pieces are the portions of the stud remaining after the cuts. If I am not wrong, under 36" is considered scrap.
If you have 8" studs, makes sense that the scraps default to 8"

Hi Patricia,

Thanks for the response. However, my garage project shows 8 FEET as the default scrap value before the estimate is created. My 20x20 garage has 26 8 FOOT lengths of 2x4 wall studs in the scrap category. Seems a bit odd to me. Thanks.

Alan

Hi Alan,

When you open the Estimator, a screen opens with the default values. The default value for scrap is 8 ft (see attached). This means the commercial size of the elements. You can change it, if necessary.
If you check your project in live view - framing mode, you will notice that not all the stud elements go from floor to ceiling, therefore you'll need scrap studs.

Patricia, Thanks for the reply. I guess I will just leave the setting at 8 feet. You can not purchase studs at shorter lengths, so 8 feet is the minimum scrap value anybody should be using for a would frame project. Thanks again.

Patricia, As I get closer to getting my project underway, I am getting more detailed with the estimate for the contractor. I noticed the estimator tool does not include any figures for exterior sheathing/plywood. I can calculate it based on the square footage of the exterior wall surface, but I was curious as to why the program does not include it in the estimate. Thanks once again.

Hi there,

You will notice a "wall insulation" field. As this is the "vertical base", you should include the plywood in this cost.
