Try this: in your Punch program => Go to => Edit => Preferences => System => Graphics => Hardware Acceleration. By default, the level of the accelerations is "Full" => Move the control to the center and see if your issue is solved. If not, move the control to the left (None) => check if your issue is solved.
There are few tricks to apply the textures
1 - Try to set the position of the little man close to the surface you wish to apply texture or color, however, you don't need to be on the floor to texture a floor, for example. If there are not interference, you can even apply a texture from the chopper.
2 - If the element elevation is under the 0.00" level => the little man elevation must be also below the 0.00" level.
3 - Doors and windows =>apply the color / texture on the surfaces parallel with the wall where the door / window is installed.

As you stated that your version is 20.0.1.1016, I am assuming that you installed the update, correct? This patch should solve the issue.
If you still experience problems, I'd say that, that is a hardware problem.
Tips
- If your video card is integrated => usually, these cards don't get a good performance for rendering purposes. Anyway, I'd suggest that you update the video card driver
- Large files need more Ram memory, so close any other application, browser, etc..
Try these steps
1 - Update all your drivers.
2 - Test a small file (1,000 Kb or less, for example) => try to render and see if it crashes.
More tips => always, the best option is the rational use of resources.
1 - Develop the constructive aspects of house first, (walls, roof, floors, doors, windows, etc.) and add the furniture at the end.
2 - Develop the topography with a low quality definition.
3 - To use fewer resources, use the Render Options: hide the unnecessary elements and reduce the quality. These options can be changed later.
4 - Working in Clear View mode increases the speed.
5 - If you are working in the interior of the house, deactivate the topography.
6 - If you are working in the exterior of the house, deactivate the interior furniture and interior lights.

There is not an automatic Save feature, however, you don't need to save the file with a different name (unless you wish different versions). While you are working, you can use File => Save or use the shortcut "Control+S".
In addition, if you are interested,
my eBook for V20 includes several images and tutorials about the issues above.
Hope this helps.
